Your business is probably invisible to ChatGPT. Here is the five minute test that proves it.

Open ChatGPT right now and ask it for the best business in your category in NZ. If your name is not in the answer, the customer asking the same question has just been sent to your competitor.

That is happening every day. Most NZ businesses do not know it.

The fix has a name. Actually it has three. SEO, AEO, and GEO. This blog explains the three, in plain English, and tells you which one to invest in first if you want to be the answer instead of the brand the AI forgot.

iMagic has been auditing NZ client sites for AI search visibility for the last six months. Most are invisible to ChatGPT and Perplexity. Not because the content is bad. Because it is not structured for how AI search reads.

Here is what is going on.

What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the work of getting your website to rank on Google's traditional results page when a customer types a search. Keyword strategy, on-page structure, technical signals, backlinks, page speed. The discipline most marketing directors already understand.

SEO has been the spine of digital marketing for twenty years. It still works. The issue is what is sitting on top of it.

When a customer searches "best brand agency Christchurch" today, two things happen on the same results page. Google's AI Overview answers the question at the top, often without the customer clicking through to any website at all. Below the AI Overview, the traditional ranked results sit where they always have. SEO controls the second part. It does not control the first.

That is the gap AEO and GEO have filled.

What is AEO? Answer Engine Optimisation explained.

Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is the work of structuring your content so AI-powered answer engines cite your business when a customer asks them a question. The answer engines are ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, and Google's own AI Overview block.

The mechanics are different from SEO. AEO is not about ranking on a page. It is about being the source the AI quotes. To be cited, the content has to be structured in a way the AI can recognise as an answer. Question-format headers. Definition-first paragraphs. Clear entity signals (who you are, where you are, what you do). FAQ schema. Internal linking that reinforces what your business is the authority on.

AEO is what gets your business in the answer when a NZ customer types "what is a brand discovery workshop" or "how long does a website project take" into ChatGPT. SEO does not get you there. AEO does.

What is GEO? Generative Engine Optimisation explained.

Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is the broader discipline of getting your business surfaced inside AI-generated responses across the full range of generative search and answer products. GEO covers AEO and extends to anywhere a generative AI produces an answer or a recommendation that includes a brand.

In practice, GEO and AEO overlap heavily. The cleanest way to think about the difference is scope. AEO is the optimisation work for the specific answer slot. GEO is the strategic discipline that includes AEO plus the entity work, the schema, the citation patterns, and the broader content architecture that makes a business recognisable across the whole AI ecosystem.

When you hear the two terms used interchangeably, that is why. AEO is a subset of GEO. Both are part of the same shift in how customers find brands.

If you take one thing from the table above, take this. Two of the three columns are where your customers are searching now, and most NZ businesses are not present.

Which one does your NZ business need?

If your business sells to NZ customers, your priority order is AEO first, GEO second, SEO third.

Here is why.

When a NZ customer types a question into ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overview block, the AI gives them the answer. Most of the time they do not click through to a source. The conversation ends inside the AI. If your business is the cited source, you get the customer's awareness and the credibility of being the answer. If you are not, the customer never knows you existed.

The shift is already well underway. Google's own data shows AI Overviews are appearing on roughly fifteen percent of NZ search queries and growing every quarter. ChatGPT has more than two hundred million users globally. Perplexity is gaining roughly twenty percent of its user base every month. Every one of those queries that used to send your customer to your SEO-ranked page is now going to an AI-generated answer first.

Traditional SEO still matters. It is the foundation the other two build on. But if your only investment is in SEO, you are optimising for the customer journey of 2019. The customer journey of 2026 routes through AI before it ever reaches the search results page.

The reason most agencies are not telling you this is that their retainer is built on SEO. Recommending you spend on AEO instead is recommending you spend less of what they bill for. iMagic has no skin in the SEO retainer game. iMagic built Iris, its own AI platform, so the agency understands AI from the build side, not just the use side. Which is why we can tell you the truth about where the customer actually is.

The full diagnostic. Three checks. Fifteen minutes.

You already ran one of these at the top of the blog. Here are the other two.

Check 1. ChatGPT. Open ChatGPT (the free version is fine) and ask it the question your customer would ask to find a business like yours. "What is the best brand agency in Christchurch." "Who builds custom software for NZ businesses." "Best ecommerce developer in Auckland." See whether your business is named in the answer. If you are not in the answer, you are not in the conversation.

Check 2. Google AI Overview. Open Google.com and search the same question. Look at the AI Overview block at the top of the page (if your query triggers one). Check whether your business is cited as a source. If you do not appear in the source list, the AI Overview is recommending your competitors and not you.

Check 3. Perplexity. Open Perplexity (perplexity.ai). Run the same search. Same question. Look at the citations Perplexity provides at the bottom of its answer. Check whether your business is one of them.

Three checks. Five minutes each. If you fail all three, your business is invisible to AI search and the customer who asks an AI for a recommendation is being sent to your competitors.

The fix is not impossible. iMagic has moved client sites from invisible to cited inside three weeks by restructuring service pages around the questions customers actually ask, adding FAQ schema, and writing definition-first content blocks. The technical work is real but it is not exotic. The strategic work, knowing which questions to structure for and which definitions to write, is where the value sits.

The shift NZ businesses are not ready for

The marketing directors I speak to are split into two groups.

The first group thinks AI search is a 2027 problem. They are wrong. The behaviour is already here. AI Overviews are answering questions that used to drive traffic to NZ sites every day. ChatGPT is recommending NZ businesses every hour. The window to be the cited source is open now. By 2027 the answer slots will be locked in to the brands that moved first.

The second group thinks AI search is too new to invest in. They are also wrong. The structural work that makes a site AI-search-ready is the same structural work that makes a site rank better on traditional SEO. FAQ schema lifts both. Definition-first content lifts both. Entity signals lift both. The investment is not double. It is the same investment, structured for both audiences at once.

What sits between those two groups is a one-year window. The NZ businesses that move now will own the answer slot in their category. The ones that wait will spend two years catching up while their competitors are cited every time a customer asks an AI for a recommendation.

That is the shift. Not whether to invest in AI search. Just how soon, and whether you want to be the one being recommended or the one wondering why your enquiries dropped.

iMagic has been building digital for NZ businesses for thirty years from Christchurch. The Best Awards have noticed the work. The agency that built Iris is now rebuilding NZ client sites for the world where AI answers the search before the search ever loads.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

AEO is the specific work of being cited as the answer by AI answer engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity. GEO is the broader strategic discipline that includes AEO plus the entity, schema, and content architecture work that makes a brand recognisable across the whole generative AI ecosystem. AEO is a subset of GEO. The two terms are often used interchangeably.

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. AEO sits on top of SEO. Traditional SEO is still the foundation that signals to search engines what a business is the authority on. AEO uses that foundation to be cited by AI answer engines. The shift in 2026 is that the priority order has changed. AEO is now where the customer is first.

How long does AEO take to show results?

iMagic has moved client sites from invisible to cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity inside three weeks. Faster than traditional SEO usually moves, because the AI answer engines re-crawl and re-cite continuously, while Google's search index updates more slowly. The structural fixes are the work. Once they are in place, the citation follows quickly.

Do I need to hire an AEO specialist agency?

You need an agency that understands both the technical structural work (schema, entity signals, content architecture) and the strategic work (which questions matter, which definitions to own). Most traditional SEO agencies do not yet have the second part. iMagic has been running AI search audits across NZ client sites for six months. We can show you what is missing in fifteen minutes.

Is AEO going to be replaced by something else soon?

The acronyms will keep changing. The underlying discipline will not. The discipline is being recognised by AI as a credible source for the questions your customers ask. That is structural content work, schema work, and entity work. It compounds. Whatever the next acronym is, the foundation is the same.

What to do next

Three options, in order of commitment.

One. Run the three checks above. Free. Fifteen minutes. You will know within the hour whether your business is invisible to AI search.

Two. Request an AI search visibility audit from iMagic. Fifteen minutes on the phone. We pull your site through our audit framework and identify the three biggest gaps. No charge.

Three. Book a scoping call. If the audit reveals the gaps you suspected, this is the conversation about how to fix them. AI search optimisation runs as a discrete sprint, not an open-ended retainer.

You can do all three. The customers who are searching for your category are already typing the question into ChatGPT today. You can be the answer they get back, or you can be the business that finds out about the shift in 2027 when the slot is gone.
